Does any 51mm scale fit the Chefman CraftBrew?

No. The nominal size is only the first check. Model-specific locking geometry, basket depth, mounting pattern, or clearance may also matter. The portafilter ear/lug pattern on this Chefman group is proprietary and undocumented. Even a correctly-sized 51mm third-party bottomless or spouted portafilter may NOT twist and lock into this group. Verify the exact ear/lug geometry against your machine (or confirm the seller lists Chefman RJ54 fitment) BEFORE buying any replacement portafilter.

Is a scale the first upgrade to buy?

Not automatically. The Chefman CraftBrew's stored upgrade order starts with tamper; fix grinder, basket, dose, or maintenance issues before adding optional tools.
