Coffee Setup Guide

Espresso accessories to avoid

Most wasted money on espresso accessories is not a bad product - it is a good product in the wrong size. Here is what goes wrong most often, and how to check before you buy.

The size trap

Baskets, portafilters, shower screens and group-specific replacement parts require the correct group size. Tampers and distributors may be 1mm under. There is no adapter between the 51, 54 and 58mm groups.

51mm machines

11 we track, incl. Chefman CafeMaster Pro, Chefman CraftBrew, De'Longhi COM530M

Avoid 54mm and 58mm parts - they will not fit, however good the listing looks.

54mm machines

9 we track, incl. Breville Bambino, Breville Bambino Plus, Breville Barista Express

Avoid 51mm and 58mm parts - they will not fit, however good the listing looks.

58mm machines

4 we track, incl. Breville Oracle Jet, Gaggia Classic Evo Pro, Gaggia Classic Pro E24

Avoid 51mm and 54mm parts - they will not fit, however good the listing looks.

Sizing exception: Tampers and distributors are the exceptions to exact-size matching: a tool 1mm under your group size (for example, 53mm on a 54mm machine) fits. Buying 1mm over does not.

How to buy safely

  1. Find your group size first: what size is my machine?
  2. Buy from your machine's own accessory pages, where every listing is graded for fit.
  3. Budget realistically before you start: what a setup costs.
