Cleaning the Breville Barista Express (cleaning cycle)
The Barista Express has a 3-way solenoid and a dedicated cleaning (backflush) cycle. The supplied rubber cleaning disc and a cleaning tablet let the machine flush oils out of the group.
When the machine prompts a clean (roughly every couple of months with daily use)
Check your manual: Follow the cleaning-cycle steps and on-machine prompts in your Barista Express manual; the 3-way solenoid is what lets this machine run a true cleaning backflush.
Step by step
- Seat the supplied rubber cleaning disc in the 1-cup (single-wall) basket and drop in one cleaning tablet.
- Lock the portafilter into the group and start the cleaning cycle as described in your manual.
- When the cycle ends, rinse the portafilter, disc, and basket, then run a plain flush of water through the group.
- Wipe and purge the steam wand after every milk session so it never clogs.
- A fouled or scaled solenoid can stick in the cleaning position and keep draining water into the tray - descale and service if you see this.
What you'll need
