Coffee Setup Guide

Descale the heater

Periodically descale to remove mineral scale from the heater and lines, using the supplied descale powder or an espresso-safe descaler.

How often

Interval depends on water hardness and the machine's descale alert; check your manual.

Soft (under ~60 ppm) Every 3-4 months
Moderate (~60-120 ppm) Every 2 months
Hard (over ~120 ppm) Monthly

Check your manual: Descale intervals depend on your local water hardness and the machine's alert, so check your manual and set water hardness accordingly.

Step by step

  1. Empty the drip tray and remove the water filter from the tank so it is not exposed to descaler.
  2. Mix the supplied descale powder with water to the tank line and run the descale mode through both the espresso and steam/hot-water paths as the manual directs.
  3. Refill with fresh water and run a full rinse cycle before making coffee again, and reinstall the water filter.

Breville Barista Express Impress maintenance questions

How often should I perform descale the heater?

Use the cadence above as a planning reminder, then follow the Breville Barista Express Impress manual because water hardness, usage, model revision, and machine alerts can change the interval.

Can I substitute a different cleaning procedure or product?

Do not assume procedures are interchangeable. Descale intervals depend on your local water hardness and the machine's alert, so check your manual and set water hardness accordingly.
