Coffee Setup Guide

Backflushing and group cleaning the Classic Pro E24

The Classic Pro's 3-way solenoid group can and should be backflushed to clear coffee oils from the shower screen and valve. Combined with a monthly shower-screen soak, this keeps shots tasting clean and protects the gasket.

How often

Water-only backflush weekly and a detergent backflush plus shower-screen soak about monthly; check your manual for Gaggia's recommended frequency.

Check your manual: Cleaning-powder dosing and backflush frequency differ by product; check your manual and the cleaner's label before backflushing, and confirm your unit supports blind-basket backflushing.

Step by step

  1. Insert a blind/blank 58mm basket into the portafilter and add a small measured amount of espresso-machine cleaning powder (e.g. Cafiza) per its directions.
  2. Lock in the portafilter, run the pump for a few seconds, stop, and let it back-flush through the solenoid; repeat several cycles.
  3. Swap to plain water in the blind basket and repeat the cycles until no detergent remains, then pull a rinse shot with an empty regular basket.
  4. Monthly, remove the central shower-screen screw, take out the brass screen, and soak it with a cleaning tablet in hot water for 20-30 minutes; scrub the group and gasket area with a brush.
  5. Reinstall the shower screen and screw, then pull a throwaway shot to confirm even flow.
