Descaling the Gaggia Classic Pro E24
Scale from mineral-heavy water is the top cause of weak flow, temperature drift, and eventual boiler and solenoid trouble on the single-boiler Classic Pro. Descale on a schedule tied to your water hardness by running descaling solution through the group head and steam wand, then rinsing thoroughly; check your manual for the exact interval and procedure Gaggia specifies.
Every 2-3 months on regular tap water, or roughly every 4-5 months with filtered/softened water; adjust to your water hardness and check your manual for the interval Gaggia specifies.
| Hard / untreated tap water | Every 2-3 months |
| Filtered or softened water | Every 4-5 months |
Check your manual: Descaler dilution, dwell time, and interval vary by product and water hardness; always check your manual and the descaler's directions for the correct procedure for your machine.
Step by step
- Turn off and unplug, remove and empty the water tank, and mix a citric-acid-based or Gaggia-approved descaler with water per the product's dilution instructions (never use vinegar).
- Fill the tank with descaling solution, remove the portafilter, and run solution through the open group head into a container so it flows through the shower screen and brew path.
- Also draw some solution through the steam wand and hot-water path, then let the machine sit as directed to dissolve scale.
- Empty the tank, refill with fresh clean water, and run several full tanks through the group and wand to rinse all descaler residue before brewing again.
- Reinstall the portafilter and pull a throwaway shot to confirm normal flow and taste.
- Avoid vinegar, which can damage seals and gaskets.
- Descale through the open group head with the portafilter removed, not through a blind/blank basket; a blind basket is for backflushing coffee oils, not for descaling the water path.
What you'll need
- Citric-acid-based descaler (e.g. Dezcal or Gaggia-approved descaler)
- Fresh filtered water for rinsing
- Large container to catch run-off

Gaggia Classic Pro E24 maintenance questions
How often should I perform descaling the gaggia classic pro e24?
Use the cadence above as a planning reminder, then follow the Gaggia Classic Pro E24 manual because water hardness, usage, model revision, and machine alerts can change the interval.
Can I substitute a different cleaning procedure or product?
Do not assume procedures are interchangeable. Descaler dilution, dwell time, and interval vary by product and water hardness; always check your manual and the descaler's directions for the correct procedure for your machine.
