Coffee Setup Guide

Descale the KitchenAid KES6503

Run the machine's built-in descaling cycle with an espresso-machine descaling solution to clear mineral scale from the boiler and keep brew temperature and flow stable. The KES6503 prompts you with a blinking Clean indicator, and the guided cycle runs in phases through the group head and steam wand.

How often

Descale when the Clean indicator blinks; otherwise on a schedule set by your water hardness. Check your manual for the exact trigger and cycle steps.

hard about once a month
soft about once a quarter

Check your manual: Intervals and the exact cycle vary with your water and firmware, so check your manual for the KES6503 descaling steps, solution ratio, and safety notes before running it.

Step by step

  1. Fill the water tank with the manufacturer-specified mix of fresh water and an espresso-machine descaling solution (the KES6503 guide calls for roughly 8.5 oz water to 4.25 oz solution); check your manual for the exact ratio.
  2. Place a container of at least ~17 oz under the group head, press and hold the Clean button until the light is solid, then start the descale cycle and let it run its four phases.
  3. When prompted, move the container under the steam wand for the wand phase, then empty, rinse, and refill the tank with fresh water to the max line.
  4. Run the final rinse phase through the group head, then discard the runoff and wipe the drip tray before your next shot.
