Descale the Dedica Duo (EC890M)
The EC890M heats via thermoblock circuits that scale up with mineral-rich water; regular descaling keeps flow, temperature, and steam consistent. This is the core maintenance task since the machine has no serviceable group to backflush.
Follow the descale interval and indicator in your manual; De'Longhi typically prompts descaling by usage/water hardness rather than a fixed calendar.
| Soft / filtered water | Roughly every 2-3 months, or when the descale indicator prompts - check your manual |
| Hard water | Roughly monthly, or when the descale indicator prompts - check your manual |
Check your manual: Descaler ratios, run cycles, and intervals vary by unit and water hardness - always check your manual for the EC890M's exact descaling procedure and safe products before starting.
Step by step
- Empty the water tank and mix De'Longhi EcoDecalk (or an equivalent espresso-machine descaler) with water at the ratio printed on the bottle, then fill the tank.
- Run the machine's descale routine per the manual, dispensing solution through the group (and the steam wand if directed) into a large container until the tank empties.
- Refill with fresh clean water and run at least one full tank through the group and wand to rinse all descaler residue before brewing again.
- Wipe the group, steam wand, drip tray, and portafilter, and soak the basket and portafilter periodically in a cleaning-tablet solution.
- Never use vinegar or non-approved acids, which can damage the thermoblock and seals.
- Do not skip the fresh-water rinse; leftover descaler taints the next shots.
What you'll need
- De'Longhi EcoDecalk (or equivalent food-safe descaler)
- Espresso-machine cleaning tablets/powder (Cafiza-type) for soaking baskets
- Soft brush and microfiber cloth

De'Longhi Dedica Duo maintenance questions
How often should I perform descale the dedica duo (ec890m)?
Use the cadence above as a planning reminder, then follow the De'Longhi Dedica Duo manual because water hardness, usage, model revision, and machine alerts can change the interval.
Can I substitute a different cleaning procedure or product?
Do not assume procedures are interchangeable. Descaler ratios, run cycles, and intervals vary by unit and water hardness - always check your manual for the EC890M's exact descaling procedure and safe products before starting.
