Clean the EM450M (no backflushing)
The EM450M isn't designed to backflush, so cleanliness comes from simple daily habits - rinsing the basket, portafilter, and frother wand - rather than a backflush cycle.
After each milk session for the wand, plus a weekly deeper rinse of the basket and portafilter with regular daily use.
Check your manual: Routine rinsing is what keeps this machine clean, but check your manual for the EM450M's recommended cleaning steps and any parts it says are or aren't user-serviceable.
Step by step
- Once the machine has cooled and the pressure has bled off, remove and rinse the pressurized basket and portafilter under hot water to clear old grounds and oils.
- Purge a little steam and wipe the frother wand immediately after every milk drink so milk never dries inside the air intake.
- Wipe the group face where the shower screen sits and rinse the drip tray; periodically soak the basket and portafilter in espresso-machine cleaner, then rinse thoroughly.
- This machine isn't designed to backflush - don't fit a blind/blank basket to force back-pressure; confirm in your manual before using any backflush accessory.
What you'll need
- Espresso-machine cleaning tablets or powder for soaking
- Group and steam-wand cleaning brush
