Descale the EM450M thermoblock

The thermoblock and water path scale up with everyday mineral water and can lose temperature stability, so periodic descaling is the core maintenance task on this machine.

How often

Every 2-3 months as a rough baseline - but check your manual, since De'Longhi ties the real interval to your water hardness.

soft water about every 3 months
hard water about every 4-6 weeks

Check your manual: These intervals are general guidance and vary with your water hardness and model revision - check your manual for the EM450M's official descaling procedure before starting.

Step by step

  1. Empty the drip tray and water tank, then fill the tank with descaling solution (De'Longhi EcoDecalk or an equivalent citric-acid espresso descaler) mixed with water per the bottle's ratio.
  2. With no portafilter locked in, run the solution through the brew group into a large container in stages, pausing to let it work as directed.
  3. Also run some solution through the steam/frother wand so the milk side gets descaled, not just the brew path.
  4. When the tank is empty, refill with fresh water and run at least one or two full tanks through both the group and the wand to rinse all descaler out before brewing again.
