Backflushing the Gaggia Classic Evo Pro
Unlike many entry machines, the Classic Evo Pro has a 3-way solenoid valve, so it is designed to be backflushed - a blind basket lets you flush oils out of the group through the solenoid.
Plain-water backflush weekly with daily use; a detergent backflush about monthly
Check your manual: Follow the backflushing steps and detergent dosing in your Gaggia Classic Evo Pro manual; the 3-way solenoid is what makes this safe on this machine.
Step by step
- Seat a blind/blank 58mm basket (a backflush disc with no holes) in the commercial portafilter and lock it into the group.
- For a plain-water flush, run the brew switch about ten seconds on, then off, and repeat four to five times - the solenoid vents the trapped pressure into the drip tray.
- For a detergent clean, add a measured dose of espresso-machine detergent (e.g. Cafiza) to the blind basket and repeat the cycle.
- Rinse: remove the blind basket, lock in the normal portafilter, and run several flushes of plain water before brewing again.
- Use a proper blind/blank basket - don't block a normal basket to force back-pressure.
- Rinse thoroughly after a detergent backflush so the next shot doesn't taste of cleaner.
