Descaling the De'Longhi Stilosa
The Stilosa has a thermoblock that scales up with hard water; periodic descaling protects heating and flow. It has no three-way valve, so descaling and wiping - not backflushing - is the correct routine.
Roughly every 2-3 months with typical water, but follow the interval in your manual - check your manual.
| soft | every 3-4 months (or per your manual) |
| medium | every 2-3 months (or per your manual) |
| hard | every 4-6 weeks (or per your manual) |
Check your manual: De'Longhi publishes a specific descaling procedure, solution ratio and interval for the Stilosa, and steps differ by model and water hardness - always check your manual before descaling.
Step by step
- Empty and remove the water tank, then mix an espresso-machine descaler with fresh water at the ratio printed on the descaler and in your manual.
- With no basket clogging flow, run the descaling solution through the group head and then the steam wand in batches into a large container until roughly two-thirds of the tank has passed through.
- Refill with clean fresh water and run at least two full tanks through both the group and the steam wand to rinse, until there is no descaler smell or taste before making coffee again.
- Do not attempt to backflush - the Stilosa has no three-way solenoid valve, so a blind/cleaning disc does nothing.
- Rinse thoroughly; residual descaler will taint the next several shots.
What you'll need
- Liquid espresso-machine descaler (citric- or lactic-acid based)
- Large container to catch runoff
- Fresh filtered water for rinsing

De'Longhi Stilosa maintenance questions
How often should I perform descaling the de'longhi stilosa?
Use the cadence above as a planning reminder, then follow the De'Longhi Stilosa manual because water hardness, usage, model revision, and machine alerts can change the interval.
Can I substitute a different cleaning procedure or product?
Do not assume procedures are interchangeable. De'Longhi publishes a specific descaling procedure, solution ratio and interval for the Stilosa, and steps differ by model and water hardness - always check your manual before descaling.
